Powered by United Way of Greater Philadelphia and Southern New Jersey and in partnership with the City of Philadelphia, The Promise is an unprecedented coalition to meet this historic moment.

Poverty isn’t inevitable.

In 2020, United Way of Greater Philadelphia and Southern New Jersey teamed up with the City of Philadelphia to launch a first of its kind collaboration between government, business, private philanthropy, and anchor institutions in an ambitious effort to reduce the poverty rate in Philadelphia and promote an equitable recovery from the pandemic.

With 100 years of driving change, United Way plays a unique role breaking down barriers and creating opportunity throughout our community.

Together, we are investing in solutions and partners that are ensuring Philadelphians get access to relief and provide them the pathway to the opportunity they so deeply deserve.

The work we are undertaking together – across the private sector and public sectors – but most importantly as a collective city – provides a model for how we can deliver immediate, equitable, and direct relief to families and workers financially impacted by the pandemic.

The proof is in the numbers.

The Promise is using a mix of tried-and-true and bold, new tactics to work alongside 100,000 Philadelphians to help them rise above the poverty line. To ensure we’re making the difference we’ve planned for, we’re tracking our progress and results every step of the way—and sharing those numbers with the community.
